High Key band photos

Sometimes it’s good to take pictures of something fun like of actual people! I’ve been cooped up in the studio for too long making videos of inanimate objects.

Bring on the BAND! These pics are for a new album cover for a local band called Villa*Nova formerly Weaving the Fate, formerly VillaNova. I don’t know, they got some catchy tunes and they are all good guys. Not much into local (or current) music myself, I’m still playing old reggae and ska albums and loving it.

As far as the pictures, basic hi-key shoot. The simplest and cheapest way to make pro looking photos. The whole idea behind hi-key is to completely wash out the background to the point where the subject is the only thing of contrast! Use any really white background, the less shiny the better. For this one I used a roll of White Vinyl Backdrop:

Once you have this make sure you use the most matte (least shiny) side so there will be no glare, then I use some very inexpensive strobes to blast the backdrop with light and also light the subjects just right. Pick up some diffusing umbrellas, and light stands and you have a setup that will take you from iphoneographer to amateur pro in a FLASH. This is a great setup anytime you have a poor lighting from overhead fluorescents and you want to soften the features while making a photo that can be perfectly pulled from the background:

I also had the privilege to record this video for a Halloween promo they were doing. bad cameras bad acting but in the end Trevor Mercer was able to pull it all together into a fun video!
