What didn’t show up on the final video (I didn’t want to scare anyone off!) was several Black Vultures!

They completely took over and blocked the camera most of the time. I guess everyone gets thirsty at some point!

OK so lots of the tools and supplies I used in my video you may not have just laying around. But I will link to everything so you know what I have and/or what you need. First up is the pump. I have suggested a few different types over the years but THIS is the type shown in the video along with the hose that goes with it.

By the way, if you don’t feel comfortable plugging in electronics under water, even though they say they are protected, run your power cord to a GFCI outlet that you know is protected… i.e. if it has the TEST and RESET button on it! There should be one in every bathroom and kitchen and hopefully all the exterior outlets are like that too. If not, you can have any outlet swapped out to a GFCI outlet.

Next is the masonry bits. If you use regular drill bits, they will immediately go dull and you’ll be drilling for an hour!

Also this is the new version of the drill I’m using in the video although it’s less expensive from Lowe’s…

This mixing tool, I also recommend, because it can be used to mix anything! It’s strong and doesn’t fling material all over the place.

Secondly I wanted to show you this Power Stake with timer. I made my own “power tower” in my yard out of masonry blocks so I wouldn’t have splitters laying in the grass, but I saw this today and I think it’s something I would purchase!

CatTV#7 was a hit, so I’ve made a 4K better quality Bird Bath video.

Here’s a quick little write up about a few options for creating running water in your birdbath. I wanted this for my bird bath to keep the bath filled up (evaporation) and even overflowing to help it clean itself and deter mosquitos, and of course the sound of water lets the birds know where it is!

You can make your own for cheap with this hose adapter and some length of 1/4″ drip irrigation hose. These two things are all your REALLY need to get going. If you want to get fancier, you can add little drip irrigation sprinklers like I did below.

Don’t forget that water running all day can be expensive so a hose timer might be a worthy investment! https://amzn.to/3uTvAms (digital) or https://amzn.to/3yjZ1jq (manual)

You can get any number of available drip irrigation sprinkler or misters to attach to the end to control the amount of water that comes out. I bought these red ones and set them up to water about 20-30 plants in my garden on ONE hose! Don’t forget the T adapters if you want water to come out of more than one place on your  hose.

<– It should look like this when you’re done! The black hose is just shoved into the hose faucet adapter thing and the same with the sprinkler. I remove the adjustable red cap and just turn down the faucet to send less water instead so there’s a nice steady stream.

Once you start using this hose you will want to have it running EVERYWHERE! Watering potted plants and vegetables and flowers and the best part is it doesn’t water the weeds like when you use a  “spray everywhere” sprinkler.

If you have a rain barrel full of water you can do like me and just toss a small submersible pump into it and have the benefit of a constantly overflowing birdbath (to help keep it clean) without the additional water waste and expense. You will have to experiment a bit with this setup because a 50 gallon tank of water will run out in just a couple hours if the flow is too high on the pump. You may want to use smaller hose and the drip irrigation sprinklers to limit the water flow.

I experimented with a few things, but some things to look out for are the large water hose can sometimes scare the birds (looks like a snake if it’s black) and the birds will perch on the water line and can knock it down. In the video you can see I put some thick wire above the water line so they would land there instead.

If you decide this is all too much work, and your water isn’t evaporating that quickly you can try one of these solar fountains. I must say they are maybe more for show than anything but you may have different results.

Thank you all my 732 subscribers! I know it doesn’t sound like a lot but without you I wouldn’t have been able to make this latest video. Orangie – Cat TV #5

Today Orangie was the star of a very brightly lit video on YouTube for Cat TV #5. You may notice a couple other small goldfish swimming about but they are new and shy and they mostly stayed under the mirror and outta sight!

Orangie is an Orando Goldfish, we bought it for around $7 at a pet store. This is him right after we got him, SO timid!

He went into a 30 gallon tank and has easily doubled in size in a year. The wen on his head that looks like brains is significantly larger!

For the video I needed a few things including a new tank; the large tank he lives in normally was slightly scuffed since it was made of acrylic. Even a light scrubbing with the wrong side of a sponge ruins the finish…

So instead of getting out a polishing kit while Orangie waited in the bathtub, I bought a simple 20 gallon glass tank for $40 which is going to make water changes much easier going forward. Inside a bucket under the bathtub faucet I put this small water pump and hose and started to fill it up!

Look carefully and you can see the DIY auto feeder I made at the very last minute… with a kitchen timer and cardboard taped to it! I realized that several hours of this might need to be spiced up a lil with meal-time for Orangie, hope it did!

Next video I’ll have a better automatic feeder to have smaller amount of food dropped more frequently for our viewing pleasure.

Triple Falls

Triple falls is located in Dupont State Recreational Forest near Brevard NC. You may recognize these falls from the Hunger Games movie and The Last of the Mohicans.

Triple Falls on Google Maps

Shot and layered at 8fps to provide a smooth long exposure 4K video along with the roar of the falls mic’d in 3 channels.

I know you probably have one… but if you don’t, this is the one I bring when I’m hiking or walking too far to carry a Bogen 3046:

While the first video was recording I climbed up the hill next to the falls toward the hiking trails that run alongside and mounted a small Canon video camera to capture the top of the falls a bit farther away. Sort of a B-roll clip that runs for 8hours! The camera I used is to the right.

I used the shotgun mic below this time to get close and personal with the birds and reduce the sound of distant cars and trains:

If you buy this mic get the additional cat tail wind screen, it eliminates the light breezes and only picks up big gusts.

Yes it’s a real thing! Screen Protector for your TV. For those worried about kitties making marks on their new TV, these screen protectors also filter out blue light so your TV doesn’t keep you up past bedtime.

4K Candle Burning

This is a 4K video of a candle burning on a black background. Can be used for Moment of Silence or for general ambience. This candle was re-wicked with a thicker cotton wick for a larger flame and the end was tapered for presentation.

Below is a short video made specifically for a Moment of Silence. It is 10 Minutes long and is suitable for use in public schools.

The American Flag

This 4K video is a view of a 3,200-square-foot American flag flying in North Carolina. This resolution is appropriate for displaying or projecting on any size screen during events and holidays. Due to the sheer size of this flag I scheduled to shoot this on a windy day after a storm in early February 2020. The largest American Flag in nearby Gastonia NC is approx 113,000 sq ft. although it is not currently on display after the owner’s passing.

A Koi Pond & calming water sounds

A trip to Greensboro NC where I found this delightful Koi Pond in a small community. It was a brisk day but I stayed long enough to capture a few minutes of this babbling waterfall. The sounds unencumbered by traffic and distractions make this a place I’ll remember.
